Puerto Armuelles, Chiriqui, Panama
A collection of photos from Puerto Armuelles, a small town close to the Costa Rica border with Panama. Puerto Armuelles used to be the center of the Chiquita Banana Companies operations in Panama, until disease affected the crops and Chiquita transferred their operations to the Caribean side of the country near Bocas del Toro. The pier is now in a state of neglect, but in it’s heyday this was a thriving town. You can see remnants of the towns former glory in the gardens and promenade along the beach.

What beautiful photos! It’s a shame that the town has deteriorated in the fashion you have described. It looks like it could be a beautiful place to relax AND a thriving workplace as well.
I must admit, Puerto Armuelles is one of my favorite places to escape to. The biggest problem is it’s remoteness from the rest of Panama.
There is only one road in, and that leads directly to the Costa Rica border at Pasa Canoas with a police checkpoint on the way as Pasa Canoas is a very open border crossing. Many shops there have entrances on both sides of the border so it is easy to pass from one country to the other.
The road was built originally for the banana trucks to connect to the port.
The nearest major town is David, which is about 1 1/2 hours away and involves another police checkpoint.
4 checkpoints to get to a supermarket and back gets old quickly.
As Puerto Armuelles is within 10 miles of Costa Rica, it is illegal for foreigners to purchase property there, although, as with most things in Panama, there are ways around that limitation using lawyers and corporate structuring.
Still an enjoyable place to visit, but I would think long and hard before living there.
I agree with most of your points, however a few need to be discussed further, I will hold a small talk with my buddies and perhaps I will ask you some opinion shortly.
